As I boarded the plane from Guadalajara to Costa Rica, I carried a whirlwind of experiences from a week-long work trip that had been both exhilarating and exhausting. Working with the leadership group in Guadalajara had been nothing short of brilliant. Still, the journey to get there, coupled with a sinus infection that plagued my sleep, had left me drained and desperate for rejuvenation.

The 26-hour travel ordeal had taken its toll, reducing my nightly rest to a mere average of three hours. When I landed in Costa Rica, I was a bundle of stress and fatigue, longing for solace and restoration. It was time to repair, detox from the digital world that had consumed me during the work trip, and immerse myself fully in the healing embrace of nature.

With its lush jungles and pristine beaches, Costa Rica provided the perfect sanctuary for my weary soul. As I ventured into the heart of the jungle, I found myself enveloped by the symphony of nature—the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the gentle hum of insects. It was as if the very essence of the jungle was whispering words of comfort, washing away the tensions that had accumulated within me.

But it was beside the ocean, lying on the golden sands and listening to the rhythmic lullaby of the waves, that I truly felt nature’s healing power. With each crashing wave, I felt a wave of calm wash over me, soothing my frazzled nerves and easing the knots of stress that had taken residence in my mind and body.

As I basked in Costa Rica’s tranquillity, I couldn’t help but reflect on the neuroscience behind my newfound sense of peace. Digital detox, the act of unplugging from screens and technology, has been shown to reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. By disconnecting from the digital world, I silenced the constant chatter of emails, notifications, and social media, allowing my mind to find reprieve and restoration.

Furthermore, the healing properties of nature have long been documented by science. Time spent in natural environments has been linked to reduced levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and increased production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for mood regulation. The sights, sounds, and smells of the jungle and the ocean were a tonic for my weary soul, replenishing my spirit and revitalizing my senses.

As I prepare to return to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I am reminded of the lessons I have learned during my time in Costa Rica. It is essential to prioritize self-care and emotional well-being, even amid busy work schedules and demanding responsibilities. I must remember to listen to my body and mind, honour the need for rest and rejuvenation, and seek solace in the healing embrace of nature whenever possible.

But perhaps most importantly, I must not neglect my emotional and psychological health as I continue to teach and guide others. Only by tending to my well-being can I genuinely serve those around me, leading by example and embodying the principles of self-care and self-compassion.

As I bid farewell to Costa Rica and carry the memories of its healing embrace with me, I am grateful for the restorative power of nature and the opportunity to nurture my body, mind, and soul amidst its beauty. May we all find moments of peace and healing in the embrace of the natural world, remembering always to tend to our well-being with love and kindness.
